Unitrends Virtual Backup 8.0 simplifies data protection for vSphere, XenServer and Hyper-V and boosts backup performance for half the TCO of competing products

BURLINGTON, Mass., July 14, 2014

Unitrends, the industry’s fastest-growing multi-environment data protection and disaster recovery company, today announced the availability of Unitrends Virtual Backup (UVB) 8.0, the only purpose-built virtual appliance providing hypervisor-level protection for VMware®, Microsoft® and Citrix®. Formerly known as PHD Virtual Backup, this Unitrends product release features performance and management enhancements that radically simplify virtual data protection, speed backup and recovery, and allow organizations to back up entire multi-hypervisor environments in just four mouse clicks. With UVB 8.0, backup and recovery can be performed up to 20 times faster, using 66 percent less storage space and 75 percent less virtual resources than competing systems—at the industry’s lowest total cost of ownership.

Simple, Yet Sophisticated Virtual Data Protection

UVB 8.0 delivers more than 140 enhancements that provide unequaled ease-of-use and major boosts to backup, archiving and replication performance, including up to eight times faster offsite backups. Featuring patent-pending Hyper-V backup capabilities, UVB 8.0 performs backups 50 times faster than the free edition, and with unsurpassed reliability

This new release also introduces a new, polished Web-based user interface (UI) as well as Unitrends’ Intelligent Optimization™, built-in intelligence based on industry best practices that automatically optimizes every step in the backup and recovery process, from expediting installation and daily backup management to full site recovery. UVB’s unified Web-based management capabilities and single dashboard enable organizations to assess entire onsite and offsite backup environments at-a-glance.

“The Unitrends Virtual Backup 8.0 interface is vastly superior to anything else on the market we tested. It’s smooth and seamless and gives you instant visibility into the virtual machine protection status of your environment, but also lets you drill down for more detail,” said Darren Boeck, IT manager, Mcneilus Steel, Inc. “Creating ad hoc backups is a requirement in our environment and Unitrends Virtual Backup makes it simple. Backup performance is rock solid, and in our tests, Unitrends recovered virtual machines twice as fast as Veeam.”

Automated, Reliable Recovery in Seconds

Beyond equipping organizations with full-featured, high-performance backup, UVB 8.0 enables them to cost-effectively guarantee recovery within their service level agreements. The virtual appliance gives customers the ability to restore data to production 20 times faster than competing products with rollback recovery, while its instant recovery capabilities enable them to get up and running in only seconds.

Accordingly to Robert Murphy, senior systems engineer, Volusion: “Unitrends Virtual Backup is highly effective in protecting our expansive virtual environment and the new version 8.0 is even better. With thousands of customers on our e-commerce platform, availability and quick recovery are top priorities. Recovery is lightning fast with Unitrends Virtual Backup 8.0. In fact, many times it’s easier and faster to recover rather than troubleshoot. I also love the Quick Start feature, which automatically optimizes deployment based on your environment type and size. This is a great product and great release.”

“Unitrends Virtual Backup 8.0 helps small to mid-sized enterprises easily and affordably overcome the hurdles of protecting increasingly complex virtual environments,” said Joe Noonan, senior product manager, Unitrends. “This release is yet another key deliverable in our overall strategy to provide organizations with flexible, agile solutions that extend well beyond data backup to applications, systems and infrastructure. We are 100 percent focused on the real end-game for our customers—recovery and business continuity.”
